In today’s data-driven business environment, the ability to effectively collect, structure, and analyze an organization’s data is essential to its growth and success. In no industry is this more true than healthcare, where data can be leveraged not only to minimize inefficiencies and maximize the bottom line, but also to improve health outcomes and enhance patient quality of life.
With the goal of improving health outcomes, a leading healthcare provider in the Southeast enlisted BlueGranite to assist in building a cloud-accessible data lake that enables it to process both structured and unstructured data; deepening research insights; informing customized patient treatment plans, and potentially saving lives. The impact of this data lake is far-reaching: the provider manages more than 7,500 licensed beds, employs nearly 6,000 people, and supports almost 12 million patient interactions each year.
When the provider reached out to BlueGranite, it had two specific challenges in mind:
- The hospital hoped to capture tumor genomics sequencing data to augment its research on disease prevention and cures. However, collecting such vast amounts of data required meticulous planning to ensure feasibility and efficient processing and analysis.
- While the provider incorporated physicians’ notes into its electronic medical records, the data was unstructured and could not be analyzed systematically with existing patient data.
BlueGranite determined a tailored Azure Data Lake implementation, reinforced by Azure HDInsight, could accommodate and grow with the health provider’s needs. By harnessing Azure’s secure, fast, cloud-based features, we conquered the provider’s challenges. Our design:
- Streamlines the data capture and analysis of tumor genomics sequencing information, improving research insights for the organization's cancer institute, and enhancing the provider’s information gathering and analysis capabilities overall.
- Utilizes an Azure Data Lake to curate unstructured data from physicians’ notes for analysis. The data lake allows the provider to maintain a holistic view of each patient’s health history and expand single patient care.
A secure, cloud-based environment example is shown below:
With Azure Data Lake’s secure, limitless storage capabilities and HDInsight’s massive processing power, the provider can further its specialized care offerings to improve patient health outcomes. Research data, patient medical history, and even patient interactions can all be aggregated and analyzed to help create targeted treatment plans and prescribe the most effective medications.
Putting the Azure Data Lake to Work
By partnering with BlueGranite, this provider is now easily collecting and integrating its patient and research data to strengthen its research endeavors and improve health outcomes.
Having access to holistic patient history can inform cutting-edge treatment. For example, a well-rounded patient view – biopsy results, test data, genomic sequencing data, and health history – in one place, might indicate that the individual would react better to a breast cancer drug rather than a liver cancer drug, despite the diagnosis. Without having access to all the above information in a centralized location, a doctor might not be able to come to such conclusion.
