Leading Healthcare Organization Uses Optimized Technology to Focus on the Real Effort: Saving Lives

Collecting data and using it to improve your organization is essential to future growth and success – but in the healthcare industry, that data can be used for so much more. This is one of the reasons that a leading healthcare organization in the southeast decided to work with BlueGranite and build a cloud accessible data lake – ultimately resulting in being able to use data to create customized treatment plans and potentially save more lives. This was no small task, considering the non-profit manages more than 7,500 licensed beds, employs nearly 6,000 people, and provides almost 12 million patient interactions each year.

The organization wanted to find ways to continue to enhance their capabilities for information-gathering and analysis, as well as their support towards research on disease prevention and cures. To that end, BlueGranite outlined a plan to streamline data capture and analysis of tumor genomics sequencing information -- a lab method of identifying the DNA or RNA sequences of cancer cells -- to support the organization's cancer institute.

The client also needed a secure, cloud-based system for analyzing unstructured data from physicians’ notes contained in electronic medical records so that they would be able to better leverage all available information to improve patient care. By integrating this data, the client would be able to expand single patient care and gain a holistic view of each patient’s health history from various sources. In a broader sense, the organization could take their collected data and apply it to cancer research for improved and customized treatment plans according to each individual patient’s needs. This specialized care leads to heightened knowledge of disease and in turn, can result in more successful treatments.

An example of the secure, cloud-based environment is shown below:

This solution will have long term impact when it comes to collecting cancer patient data and using it to create more effective treatment plans. As an example, if a patient with liver cancer needs a biopsy, their test data, genomic sequencing data, and their health history could indicate that the individual will react better to a breast cancer drug opposed to a liver cancer drug – something a doctor might not know without having access to this essential information all in one place.

When it comes to prescribing medications, the more data and medical history that doctors have available, the better. By partnering with this healthcare organization, BlueGranite was able to help them achieve their goal in collecting and integrating patient data in order to provide more specialized care.
